State sends seven golfers to match with Carolinas
DANIELS, W.Va. -- Seven golfers from West Virginia are on the Virginias team taking on their Carolinas counterparts Friday and Saturday in the 67th Captain's Putter Matches on the Cobb Course and Stonehaven Course at The Resort at Glade Springs.
Each team has 24 golfers. Players from West Virginia and Virginia make up the Virginias squad. Players from North Carolina and South Carolina comprise the Carolinas lineup.
Pat Carter of Huntington, who won his 13th West Virginia Amateur title in July, is one of the four Mountain State selections in the regular division. The others are Sam O'Dell of Hurricane, Bruce Wetherholt of Barboursville and West Virginia Amateur runner-up Winston Canada of Oak Hill.
West Virginia seniors on the roster include Steve Fox of Huntington, Harold Payne of Hurricane and Scott Bibbee of Vienna. Fox is a co-captain along with Richard Wright of Virginia Beach.
The Virginias team won the 2011 match, 26-22, at Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C. It was the first win for the Virginias since 2008 and first on North Carolina soil since 2003.
The format consists of four-ball and foursome matches Friday and singles matches Saturday. Foursomes and singles matches will be held on the Cobb course. Four-ball matches will be on Stonehaven. A victory in each match scores one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each side.
Carolinas leads the all-time series 47-18-1, but the two teams have split the matches, 5-5-0 dating back to 2002. The matches annually rotate between sites in the Virginias and the Carolinas. The matches are making their first visit to West Virginia since being held at Glade Springs in 1976.
