Oct. 22, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Memphis won the final two sets to overcome a 2-1 deficit and defeat Marshall, 3-2, Sunday in Conference USA volleyball at Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall won the first set 25-18 and third 25-17 and Memphis took the second 26-24. Altrese Hawkins and Marija Jovanovic sparked the Tigers (9-16, 4-6 C-USA) as they won the final two sets 25-23 and 15-13 to complete a 2-0 road trip and 0-2 home weekend for the Thundering Herd (16-8, 6-4 C-USA).

Hawkins and Jovanovic led the Tigers in kills with 18 and 16, respectively. Hawkins becomes the second Memphis player to reach 1,700 career kills.

Similar to Friday night's loss against UAB, Marshall was able to out-compete the Tigers in every statistical category, but unforced errors at the service line hurt the Herd in the end. Marshall committed 18 service errors on the day.

Four Marshall players combined for more than 10 digs including Laura Der, Sammie Bane, Dorothy Rahal, and Andrea Snipes-Booker. Rahal had a team-high 21, while Snipes-Booker added a season-high 11 from the back row. Outside hitter Katy Schad led the team on offense with 22 kills and a .360 hitting percentage after only committing four attack errors. She also combined for eight digs and two blocks.

Der followed with 19 kills and 16 digs for a double-double. Setter Sammie Bane tied a season-high, recording 58 assists and helped Marshall grab the second-most kills earned all season with 62.

The Herd will return to action Friday against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. Game time is 8 p.m. The road trip continues Sunday against UCF in Orlando with a noon start.
