Offense: Darius Marshall
The junior tailback rushed for 109 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown, against a physical Virginia Tech defense. He was the Thundering Herd's lone skill player to total more than 60 yards.
Defense: DeQuan Bembry
Like Darius Marshall, Bembry made his 2009 debut Saturday. He kept his team in the game early, intercepting Tyrod Taylor in the end zone.
Special teams: Kase Whitehead
A line-drive kick was returned for a Virginia Tech touchdown, but Whitehead averaged 42 yards on 10 punts. His busy day included a long kick of 54 yards.
