Capital’s comeback leaves HHS with no wins
CHARLESTON -- Huntington High had an opportunity for victory slip from its grasp Friday night.
Capital overcame a 20-0 halftime deficit to end the Huntington High season with a 28-20 victory on the University of Charleston Stadium artificial turf at Laidley Field.
Huntington High finished an 0-10 season under its first-year head coach, Billy Seals. In two previous seasons the Highlanders went into their final game 0-9 and won.
Capital, which committed four turnovers in the first half, stopped giving the ball away and battled all the way back.
Quarterback Joshua Sharp's 10-yard touchdown run, followed by a two-point Justin Cousins conversion run, put the Cougars ahead, 21-20, with 3:14 remaining.
Sharp scored on a 1-yard carry earlier in the fourth quarter.
The Cougars tacked on a late score on a Sharp touchdown pass to Myles Duiguid.
Capital (6-4) gained possession of the C&O Bell traveling trophy and moves into the Class AAA playoffs.
Huntington High's 20-point first half burst began when Brandon Eubank carried the ball 46 yards to the Capital 3-yard line on reception from Davonte Marable and Johnny Easthom scored on a 3-yard touchdown run at 3:40 of the first quarter.
Capital committed turnovers on its next four possessions, losing two fumbles and throwing two interceptions.
Huntington High took over at the Cougars' 9 after a fumble recovery. A penalty backed the Highlanders up before Taquan Hayes pulled down an 11-yard pass from Marable in the corner of the end zone for another touchdown.
Isaiah Atkins picked off a Capital pass to set up Darian Shackelford's 25-yard touchdown reception from Marable that put Huntington High ahead, 20-0, at halftime.
Demadre Turner had the other first-half pass interception.
Capital drove for a touchdown in the third quarter.
