'Thunder Walk' kicks off 2010 Coal Bowl

September 08, 2010 @ 09:00 PM

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall's football team "Thunder Walk" will begin about 2 hours and 15 minutes before kickoff at home games.

The "Thunder Walk" begins at 4:45 p.m., Friday, for the Friends of Coal Bowl between Marshall and West Virginia at 7 p.m. in Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Marshall players and coaches will depart buses behind Hodges Hall dormitory and make their way through campus and across Marshall Memorial Boulevard into the Stadium West Lot on their way to the Shewey Athletic Center locker room.

Members of the Marching Thunder and the cheerleaders will lead the way.

Fans are encouraged to line up along the route that passes by the first-year residence halls and the Student Recreation Center into the north-west gate of the Stadium West Lot and continues toward the Shewey Athletic Center.

Women's soccer

ATHENS, Ohio -- Cathryn Rogers converted on a penalty kick early in the 82nd minute, and the Ohio defense took care of the rest Wednesday in a 1-0 women's soccer victory over Marshall at Chessa Field.

Ohio goalkeeper Mattie Liston recorded her second shutout of the season for the Bobcats (2-2-0).

Marshall's record slipped to 2-2-2.

"Our possession was fairly good in spurts, and we were organized defensively," Ohio coach Stacy Strauss said. "We did a good job taking away their threatening players, which is what we wanted. Marshall is a good team, and they put a lot of pressure on the ball. That forced us to play quicker."

Ohio's defense held Marshall without a shot on goal through the first half.

Megan Tabler nearly scored for Marshall in the 61st minute on a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.

Marshall also missed two scoring chances in the 88th minute.

Tennis

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Marshall women's tennis begins its fall season Friday-Sunday in the William and Mary Invitational. Tournament matches will be played at the Millie West Tennis Facility, the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, the Rec. Courts and the Kiwanis Courts.

Marshall cheerleaders participate in the Thunder Walk prior to the Marshall vs. SMU C-USA football game on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
