Ironton dominates selections
HUNTINGTON -- There was certainly a lot of orange among the contingent of representatives named to the Ohio Division IV All-Southeast District team on Tuesday afternoon.
Ironton head coach Bob Lutz was named co-Coach of the Year while Fighting Tigers' defensive end Jon Monnig was named the Defensive Player of the Year and five Ironton players joined Monnig on the All-Southeast District First Team.
Ironton's offensive line has led the Fighting Tigers' surge into Saturday's regional final and linemen Sam Cramblit and Robbie Webb were recognized for their outstanding efforts on the First Team.
Running back Tres Wilks joined his blocking mates on the offensive unit while Monnig and linebacker Erin Edens were on the defensive side.
Fairland also produced a pair of representatives in Division IV with Matt Bloomfield being named as the First Team offensive all-purpose selection. Teammate Chad Fisher was named as a defensive back.
Rock Hill's Mitchell Davenport also made the first team as an offensive end while South Point's Greg Taylor joined Monnig on the defensive line.
Ironton had four honorable mention selections -- Keith Wetzel, Ethan Preston, J.P. Taylor and Brian Warner -- while Fairland produced three -- Tyler Duty, Matt Campbell and Adam Lee.
Rock Hill had two honorable mention nominees -- Will McCollister and Wayne Jenkins -- while South Point's Doug Dillon also was honorable mention.
In Division V, Coal Grove produced five first-team selections. Quarterback Evan Ferguson was joined by lineman Travis Jackson and all-purpose choice Oakie Haynes on offense while lineman Aaron Dickess and linebacker Frank Delawder also made top unit.
Chesapeake running back Gabriel Freyre also was named to the first team.
Honorable mention selections included Coal Grove's Corey Willis and Steven Boyd, along with Chesapeake's Peter Hintz.
Oak Hill's Jesse Slone and Nelsonville-York shared the Offensive Player of the Year award while Minford's Tyler Gaines was the Defensive Player of the Year. Oak Hill's Greg Phillips was Coach of the Year.
In Division VI, Symmes Valley's Kyle Bowen was named the Defensive Player of the Year while Rusty Webb was the Coach of the Year.
The Division VI First-Team featured Bowen, Symmes Valley running back Evan Harrell, linebacker Hunter Boggs and defensive backs Justin Payne and Tyler Eastham.
Honorable mention selections included three Symmes Valley players -- Grant Foster, Billy Bloomfield and Wayne Meads -- and Green's Caleb Lewis.
