Wheelersburg track holds grand re-opening

WHEELERSBURG, Ohio -- Southern Ohio Speedway has a grand re-opening Friday after not running a full season of stock car racing since 2003.

The Southern Showdown highlights Friday's schedule with the ADRA Late Model class $3,000 to win feature, the Modified $3,000 to win feature and the Bomber feature paying $400 to win.

Track gates open at 4 p.m., Friday, with hot laps beginning at 7 p.m. General admission is $15 for age 17 and older, $5 for age 13-16, $2 for age 7-12 and free for age 6 and younger. The 4/10th-mile dirt oval track has grandstand seating and areas for lawn chairs.

A strong field of Late Models is anticipated, led by Rod Conley of Wheelersburg, the ADRA series point leader.

Barboursville girls win, make state final

PETERSBURG, W. Va. -- The age 9-10 Barboursville All-Stars advanced to the West Virginia State Tournament softball finals after defeating Elk District, 5-2, on Wednesday evening.

Starter Morgan Bennett struck out 12 batters and added an RBI at the plate to guide the bunch. Mikayla McIntosh and Gracie Hightower also were good for runs batted in.

Barboursville, which is now 9-0 since the start of the District 1 tournament, will take on Mountain State in the championship at 4 p.m., Thursday.
