Barboursville and Ceredo-Kenova boys draw into same pool at state tournament
BECKLEY -- District 1 champion Barboursville and runner-up Ceredo-Kenova play in the same pool of the Little League Baseball age 11-12 state tournament being hosted by Beckley Little League.
Pool 4 includes Barboursville, C-K and District 5 runner-up Bridgeport.
Fourteen teams compete Saturday through Monday in pool play to determine the final eight teams. A single-elimination playoff to determine the champion begins Tuesday. The winner of Thursday's championship game earns a berth for the Southeast Region Tournament in Warner Robins, Ga.
Barboursville defeated C-K for the District 1 championship, 8-0. C-K advanced as the district runner-up by beating Wayne, 10-2.
Opening cermonies were Friday at Linda K. Epling Stadium, home field of the West Virginia Miners of the Prospect League.
State tournament games are at Beckley Little League fields 1 and 4.
Beckley Little League did close to $100,000 in improvements to the fields, including $45,000 on lighting, since hosting the age 9-10 state tournament in 2010, the Beckley Register-Herald newspaper reported.
Field 1 received sod from the Old White Course at The Greenbrier Resort and has new grass in the outfield. The league cleaned up the hill overlooking Field 4, seeding it with new grass. Work was also done to alleviate the drainage problem at the facility.
"We've made it a real nice place for people to watch games from, league spokesman Gary Poling said in the Register-Herald report.
