Barboursville girls fall to Florida in softball regional
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. -- Savannah Powell tossed a one-hitter Thursday, leading Lake Wales (Fla.) past Barboursville, 10-0, in the opening pool play game of the Little League Softball age 11-12 Southeast Regional.
Powell allowed only a leadoff single to Karlee Alderman in the first inning. She walked one and had two strikeouts in the four-inning game.
Lake Wales, the Florida champion, put up three runs in the bottom of the first. Jamesia Stoudemire singled, stole second and scored on Mary-Margaret Maggard's single. Stevie Miller was hit by a pitch. Courtney Lang's single drove in two more.
Florida went ahead 7-0 in the second inning. Savannah Powell had a two-out single, moved up on a wild pitch and took third before Alona Harris walked. Stoudemire's triple drove in two runs. Maggard's triple scored another run, and she scored on an error.
Alexis Cables singled to begin another three-run rally in the third inning. Cables was caught stealing and Mary Haff reached base on an error. Powell and pinch-runner Alyssa Rivera advanced on an error. Back-to-back triples by Alona Harris and Stoudemire accounted for the runs.
Barboursville put two runners on base in the second inning when Hannah Villars reached on an error and Bethany Koontz walked and left both players stranded.
Makala Bell of Barboursville walked in the fourth and was erased on a double play.
The West Virginia champions play another pool play game at 4 p.m., Friday, against North Myrtle Beach (S.C.).
