Rain delays three games; Columbus American wins
CEREDO-KENOVA — A record-setting performance highlighted the opening game of the Little League Baseball age 9-10 Tournament of State Champions before Mother Nature washed the other three games Saturday at Mitch Stadium.
In the biggest offensive output in the seven-year history of the tournament, Columbus American (Ga.) scored five runs in the final two innings to earn a 14-12 victory over Northwood (S.C.).
Northwood scored five in the bottom of the second inning, and Columbus American answered with six runs in the top of the third.
Undaunted, Northwood continued its onslaught in the bottom of the third, scoring six times.
Northwood's inning was highlighted by a two-run double from Myles Daniels that helped produce a 12-9 lead.
After an oddity -- a scoreless fourth inning -- Columbus American knotted the game with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Following an RBI double by Parker Younce, Columbus American's Timbo Trawick launched a two-run homer to knot the game. The home run was Trawick's second of the day, with the other being a three-run shot in the six-run third inning. He finished with six RBIs.
The game-winners came across in the sixth when Columbus American loaded the bases and scored on an error and a groundout.
Columbus American relief pitcher Bryce Valero struck out the side in the sixth to earn the save.
The contest lasted 3 hours and 16 minutes from a 3 p.m. first pitch to its 4:56 p.m. ending. Soon after, a storm hit and brought new meaning to the term "pool play."
Bull City (N.C.) and Goodlettsville (Tenn.) made it through two full innings with Bull City holding a 3-2 lead before rain washed it out. Heavy showers flooded the area, and a few cars in the parking lot. The field was doused with nearly three inches of rain in less than a 45-minute period.
Tournament director Paul Billups said Sunday pool play will go on as scheduled with games beginning at 1 p.m.
Sunday night, decisions will be made on schedule adjustments and whether the rained out games Saturday will be made up.
Billups said his crew would work through the night pumping water off the field.
