Wilkes County advances to finals
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. -- Wilkes County, N.C., stopped Barboursville's run Sunday in the Little League Softball age 11-12 Southeast Regional Tournament semifinals, 6-2.
Wilkes County, the North Carolina state champion with a 4-0 record in the tournament, plays in the finals at 6 p.m., Monday, against the other semifinal winner, either Daniel Boone from Gray, Tenn., or Lake Wales, Fla.
Barboursville, the West Virginia state representative, advanced into the semifinals with a 2-1 record in pool play. Barboursville lost its tournament opener against Lake Wales, 10-0, before defeating North Myrtle Beach, S.C., 3-1, and McLean, Va., 9-6.
Wilkes County starting pitcher Emily Visnic allowed one hit in the first two innings and recorded the win. Olivia Canterbury went the distance for Barboursville, allowing six runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Caitlin Shepherd had two of the six Wilkes County hits.
Barboursville collected five singles against four Wilkes County pitchers. Canterbury, Makla Bell, Hannah Villars, Bethany Koontz and Hannah Morgan had the hits. Bell and Koontz knocked in the runs.
