Dozens of area children take part in the 9th annual Try-A-Triathlon
LAVALETTE -- On Saturday morning, 60 young athletes took to the grounds of Beech Fork State Park to test their fitness in the 9th annual St. Mary's and Herald-Dispatch Kids Try-A-Triathlon.
Those 60 aspiring youngsters took to the course at Beech Fork to take part in a triathlon which consisted of a swim, bike ride and run.
For the 6-7 and 8-9 year-old divisions in both male and female, the triathlon included a 50-yard swim, two-mile bike ride and one-mile run. The 10-11 and 12-14 divisions took part in a 100-yard swim, 5-mile bike ride and 2-mile run.
Winners for the male divisions included Jimmy Hart (12-14, 36:24), Zane Porter (10-11, 36:35), Dalton Gray (8-9, 23:39), Gavin Lochow (6-7, 23:15), Taylor Gray (5, 24:40) and Harrison Riggs (3-4, 22:58).
Winners in the female divisions included Haven Lochow (12-14, 40:24), Emilie Charles (10-11, 35:58), Faith Smith (8-9, 21:10), Holley Riggs (6-7, 27:58), Dana Marlowe (5, 32:45) and Qunicy Mullins (3-4, 14:50).
The Kids Try-A-Triathlon is the first of two Triathlon events going on this weekend.
On Sunday morning, the 10th annual St. Mary's Triathlon will take place at Harris Riverfront Park. Participants will take part in a half-mile swim, a 15-mile bike ride and a 5K run through downtown Huntington.
With the move to downtown, there will be several road closings that will affect traffic in the Huntington area on Sunday. Veterans Memorial Boulevard between 1st Street and 13th Street and Virginia Avenue between 1st Street and 12th Street West will be closed to traffic during the race as will 12th Street West between Virginia and Adams avenues and 24th Street East between 3rd and 5th avenues.
