State leases Monroe property to resort developer
CHARLESTON — The state is leasing 625 acres in Monroe County to a developer who plans to revive a historic resort.
The state-owned property is next to the former Sweet Springs Resort. The Department of Agriculture says developer Warren D. Smith plans to construct a golf course, amphitheater, vineyard and other attractions on the leased property.
Terms of the lease were not disclosed Thursday.
Smith said a subsidiary bottling company at the resort is bottling mountain spring water and mineral water, which will be marketed as SweetSommer Water.
The resort features a hotel that was built around 1839. Smith said he wants the resort to become a showcase for historic preservation and economic development.
