Utilities to fix flooded homes

January 26, 2011 @ 09:36 PM

HUNTINGTON — Two utility companies will split restoration costs associated with a water main break that flooded several homes this month along Norway Avenue.

American Electric Power and West Virginia American Water Company announced their agreement Wednesday, hours after The Herald-Dispatch sought a response to comments from frustrated residents who had received letters stating neither utility accepted liability for the damage they suffered.

Jamie Adkins, of 944 Norway Ave., found herself stuck in the middle. She considered it one of the most stressful times she has experienced.

“It’s so out of your hands,” she said. “You’re waiting for someone else to do the right thing. I never dreamed you’d have to get ugly for people to do the right thing.”

Electricity crews punctured the 12-inch main about 9:45 a.m. Jan. 4. Countless gallons of water shot into the midmorning sky, rushed downhill and flooded neighboring houses.
