HUNTINGTON —  An Ohio man was killed in a multiple-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon on the West Virginia side of the 17th Street West bridge.

Dwayne Thomas Lawson, of Gallipolis, Ohio, died in the crash that was reported to Cabell County 911 dispatchers at 3:46 p.m. Wednesday, said West Virginia State Police Captain Mike Albers in a press release.

Dispatchers said five vehicles were involved in the accident, which happened on the Washington Avenue entrance ramp of the bridge.

Dispatchers said a second person was transported to a local hospital by Cabell County EMS, but that person's injuries were not life-threatening.

The accident immediately shut down traffic coming in from Ohio, leaving some vehicles stranded on the bridge for almost three hours. Vehicles heading into Ohio were able to slowly pass by for about 15 minutes before Huntington Police completely shut traffic down in that direction as well. The bridge was opened just after 7 p.m. Wednesday night.

The incident remains under investigation by West Virginia State Police.
