More expansion planned at federal training center in W.Va.
HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — Sen. Robert C. Byrd and the commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection will help break ground for a new leadership academy and cut the ribbon on a firing range in Harpers Ferry this week.
Commissioner Ralph Basham and other dignitaries plan to attend Friday’s event at the 124-acre Advanced Training Center, which opened in Harpers Ferry almost three years ago.
The center is designed to serve the specialized needs of customs and border patrol agents.
The new firing range has five zones for rifles and handguns, plus classrooms and weapon cleaning areas.
The Leadership Academy will help train officers, agents and more than 600 new supervisors the agency adds to its ranks each year.
