Council to vote on zoning policy overhaul

February 07, 2010 @ 11:52 PM

Huntington City Council will vote Monday, Feb. 8, on an overhaul of policies for residents and property owners of proposed zoning changes in their neighborhoods.

The city currently notifies property owners within 200 feet of the property that is subject to a special permit or zoning change. Two proposed ordinances on second reading would extend that distance to 400 feet and require that the city notify renters in addition to property owners.

The renters provision as well as added notification costs were sticking points when the changes were introduced last month. The ordinances have since received favorable recommendations from the council's planning committee.

The added notification costs would be passed on to the applicant wanting a special permit or zoning change. The council also reviewed a third ordinance on second reading Monday that increases the costs of special permit applications, occupancy certificates and rezoning applications to defray notification costs.

The council meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall. The meeting is televised live on channel 24 of the Comcast Cable system. Here's a look at other items on the agenda:

POLICE VEHICLES: The council will vote on the second reading an ordinance authorizing the purchase of six new Chevrolet Impalas for the Huntington Police Department's Detective Bureau.

The $103,180 contract would go to Hurricane Chevrolet. Funding for the vehicles would come from the city's illegal drug proceeds forfeiture account.

TTA LEVY: The council will vote on the second reading an ordinance that places renewal of The Transit Authority's city excess levy on the May 11, 2010, primary election ballot.

The council approved the ordinance in late December, but the dates for the starting and ending period of the levy were incorrect, TTA General Manager Paul Davis said.
