Spring outings in full bloom around Tri-State
The spring greening is giving everybody the itch to get up and enjoy the outdoors.
Here's a look at just a few of the outdoor events in the region this weekend:
CREEK CLEANUP: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Project Clean Creek on Symmes Creek at the Chesapeake, Ohio, boat ramp. Bring your own picnic lunch if you wish. Help pick up litter and survey needs for future projects at that site. E-mail at symmescreek@gmail.com.
WILDFLOWER HIKE: Carter Caves State Resort Park in Olive Hill, Ky., hosts the annual wildflower pilgrimage and campers appreciation weekend. This weekend has been set aside as a special weekend for campers. Those camping this weekend will get two nights camping for the price of one. Special rates will apply to campers for mini-golf and cave tours. Some of the recreation programs include a Smokey Lake canoe trip, crafts, homemade ice cream and a live performance on Saturday night. For Wildflower Weekend we will have several wildflower walks and programs to show the guest the array of the wildflowers of Carter Caves.
ATV RALLY: The Hanging Rock ATV Club in Hanging Rock, Ohio, hosts its annual Rick 'n' Roll ATV Rally. It runs today through Sunday in the Wayne National Forest at Hanging Rock.
There's a poker run, pig roast, hoot owl ride, GPS hunt, ATV parade, kids activities and much more, including 51 ponds at this former strip mine site.
Cost is $10 per ATV and $25 for up to four per family. Helmets and eye protection required. Take U.S. 52 west to exit Ohio, 650 at Hanging Rock, Ohio (in between Ironton and Haverhill exits). Go online at www.hratvclub.com.
TROUT DERBY: Saturday morning you can take part in one of the area's oldest trout derbies at Shawnee State Park near Friendship, Ohio. The 42nd Annual Trout Derby. Come try to catch the biggest fish. Call 740-858-6652.
WILDFLOWER HIKE: Registration begins at 9 a.m. for the annual Osbra Eye Memorial Walk at Kanawha State Forest in Charleston. Discover spring in bloom and bud. A diverse choice of led hikes by notable area naturalists. Morning refreshments. Call 304- 925-2771.
GREENBRIER RIVER RACE: Saturday, the Great Greenbrier River Race, in Marlinton, Pocahontas County. Triathlon includes run, canoe and bicycle. Classes for teams and solo.
