HUNTINGTON -- Anthony Midget, former All-American cornerback at Virginia Tech, has been hired as a defensive assistant coach at Marshall University.

Thundering Herd coach Doc Holliday made the announcement Monday.

Midget served as Georgia State's defensive coordinator in 2012 and secondary coach and special teams coordinator since 2008. He made All-American at Virginia Tech in 1999.

"It's an honor to be coaching at Marshall," Midget said. "I was recruited out of high school by coach Holliday and I have great relationships with fellow assistants J.C. Price (another former Virginia Tech star) and JaJuan Seider, so it's wonderful to have that familiarity.

"One of the things that drew me to Marshall was how connected the Huntington community is to the football program. I look forward to experiencing that firsthand and helping the Thundering Herd achieve greatness."

Midget's special teams at Georgia State excelled in 2010, its inaugural season. The Panthers were not eligible for NCAA rankings, but would have been in the national Top 10 for net punting average (37.34) and kickoff return average (24.20).

In 2011, the Panthers were 23rd nationally in punt return average (11.1).

Albert Wilson, a wide receiver recruited by Midget was the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Special Teams Player of the Year in 2012 after averaging 25.9 yards on kickoff returns.

"Anthony is an excellent addition to our staff," Holliday said. "He brings us a wealth of experience, not only as a coach, but also a scholar-athlete who competed at the highest level."

Midget is a native of Clewiston, Fla., who was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2000 NFL Draft and also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He was a Virginia Tech graduate assistant in 2007, helping the Hokies to the Atlantic Coast Conference title and a berth in the FedEx Orange Bowl. Midget also served five years (2002-07) coaching at Lake Worth High School in Lake Worth, Fla., where his positions included assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, defensive backs coach and running backs coach.

Midget graduated from Virginia Tech in 1999 with a degree in sociology. He has a daughter, Anaiya.
