2 accused of taking scooter for ride
HUNTINGTON -- A man and woman are charged with stealing a motorized shopping cart from Wal-Mart and driving it to and from a neighboring strip club early Monday morning.
The incident happened about 1:40 a.m. along U.S. 60 just east of Huntington.
Authorities charged Billie Jo Stevenson, 36, and Jonathan Lee Misner, 34, with grand larceny and public intoxication. The Huntington residents were jailed before dawn.
Criminal complaints charge that a customer spotted a man driving the motorized shopping cart west on U.S. 60 as a woman walked behind. A state trooper then found the abandoned cart parked in the westbound lane of U.S. 60 near the strip club.
Sheriff's deputies then arrived to spot two people walk from the strip club to the abandoned cart. A complaint charges Stevenson then drove the motorized shopping cart along U.S. 60 before both suspects were apprehended. The deputy's incident report states Misner walked alongside as Stevenson drove.
Both suspects appeared to be intoxicated from drinking alcohol, according to the complaints and incident report.
Wal-Mart was set to provide video surveillance of the incident, although the complaints state exceptionally foggy conditions could hamper visibility. Store security valued the cart at $3,000.
Cabell County Magistrate Mike Woelfel set bond for both suspects at $11,000. Both remained behind bars as of late afternoon Monday.
