Colorful McCord will be guest at Huntington Classic

Mar. 28, 2008 @ 01:57 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Gary McCord, the colorful CBS Sports golf commentator known for his sense of humor and irreverent wit, is this year's guest for The Huntington Classic.

The July 13-14 event at Guyan Golf and Country Club is a benefit for Cabell Huntington Hospital and the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Corporate sponsorships and golfer registrations are being accepted. Call 526-2339 or 691-1711.

McCord, 59, became an instant celebrity when he was banned from working at The Masters after he made some unflattering remarks about Augusta National Golf Club during the 1994 tournament. McCord said on-air that the Augusta greens were so slick the club must have "used bikini wax" on them and that the bumpy terrain looked "suspiciously like body bags," according to a Golf Magazine article.

He was invited to be on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. He also played himself in the Kevin Costner movie "Tin Cup."

McCord writes for Golf Digest magazine and has authored three books -- "Golf for Dummies," "Golf for Dummies II" and "Just a Range Ball in a Box of Titleists."

His playing career includes 23 years on the PGA Tour without a victory, although he made the cut in 242 of 378 tournaments and finished second in two tournaments.

He still plays in some Champions Tour events, with two appearances this year. He made the cut both times.

His career earnings are more than $5.3 million in pro tournaments.
