HURRICANE, W.VA – A Hurricane police officer was shot and a suspect killed when an overnight police chase led to a shooting in Hurricane.

According to Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards, Hurricane Police Sgt. Phillip Armentrout was shot in an upper leg at the scene and a suspect was shot multiple times before dying on scene.

The shootings were a result of a vehicle pursuit on U.S. 60 that ended near the intersection of U.S. 60 and W.Va 34 in Hurricane when the suspect crashed a vehicle being pursued by Hurricane police.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday, two groups of several gunshots were heard being fired rapidly, along with police sirens, throughout town.The pursuit ended when the driver wreck his vehicle. Armentrout was shot when he approached the vehicle, authorities said.

Edwards said Armentrout was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he was released just after 2 a.m. Monday.

“Please keep Phillip in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers,” Edwards said. “Please keep HPD Cpl. Robert Flinn, HPD Patrolman Brandon Oiler, the two Putnam County Sheriff’s Deputies and all other officers involved in this situation in your thoughts and prayers as well.”

Putnam County 911 Dispatchers estimate the road will be closed for several hours into Monday as the police investigation continues. It could impact morning commute traffic.
