HUNTINGTON – The Cabell County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an early morning Huntington shooting that left one man dead.

According to Sheriff Chuck Zerkle, Cabell County 911 received a call at about 4 a.m. about a possible shooting in the 6200 block of Wentz Hollow Road in Huntington, off of the Big Ben Bowen Highway.

“She called 911 in the middle of the night, heard someone in the house and woke up and said someone was on top of her,” he said. “She shot him and subsequently found out it was her husband. We are still in preliminary investigation phase.”

Zerkle said Cathy Elder was the shooter and the deceased is her husband, David Elder. The sheriff’s department had responded to domestic-related calls at the residence in the past, he said.

Elder’s body will be sent to the medical examiner’s office in Charleston for an autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing, but no charges had been filed Thursday.
