CEREDO — The Ceredo Police Department has identified a body discovered Tuesday morning in a local playground as that of a 15-year-old girl, but has not yet released her name.
Investigators were called around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday to the scene at 2nd Street, where they found a body near playground equipment.
Police Chief Tony Poston confirmed the body found was that of a 15-year-old girl and said the mother had been notified and brought to the scene to further confirm the identity. The body was then removed from the playground and taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death, which remains unknown.
Poston said there is nothing that suggests foul play, and there were no abnormal markings on the body upon discovery.
Authorities left the scene around 9:30 a.m.
“It’s under investigation, and it doesn’t appear to be anything in nature where we can tell that the female was attacked or any physical harm was done,” Poston said, reiterating that cause of death is still unknown and continuing to be investigated.
He said the family is new to the area and has only lived in Ceredo for about a month. Out of respect for the mother and undisclosed internal issues pertaining to the family, the name will not be released at this time.
Ceredo Town Council discussed earlier this month the possibility of removing the playground on 2nd Street and converting it to a dog park, citing that it was not used that often.
The equipment had recently been inspected and no safety issues were reported to the mayor or Town Council at the time of that report.
