BARBOURSVILLE — Barboursville police have released the name of a Cabell County woman who died after being struck by a vehicle Sunday evening.

Lisa Fitzwater, 43, of Long Branch Road in Cabell County, died Monday morning as a result of her injuries, Barboursville Police Chief Daren McNeil said.

Fitzwater was struck by a car about 9:30 p.m. Sunday along U.S. 60 in front of the River Place Plaza. At the time of the crash, authorities said Fitzwater had been conscious and stable on the way to the hospital.

McNeil said police believe she was retrieving a doll found in the roadway. He was unsure how the item got there, he said.

“Basically it looks like she was in a vehicle with another person and they were traveling east when a piece of debris came from their vehicle and fell onto the roadway in about the 6000 block of U.S. 60,” he said. “They pulled over to retrieve the item and (…) Fitzwater went out into the lanes of traffic and was hit by a vehicle that was also traveling eastbound.”

Low lighting and Fitzwater’s dark clothing were also contributing factors in the crash, he said. McNeil added other witnesses had reported they had also nearly struck the victim with their vehicles.

As of Monday afternoon, police do not suspect foul play, but once completed, the investigation information will be turned over to the Cabell County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if the case will be presented to a grand jury for possible indictment.
