Make sure they are licensed for the type of work you need. West Virginia offers various licensing specialties so one contractor may be licensed to do siding but not roofing, for instance. You can check a contractor’s license on the WV Division of Labor website: http://labor.wv.gov
Make sure they are insured. They should have both worker’s compensation insurance and liability insurance. Verify with the insurance companies that the contractor is in fact insured.
Ask for customer references for jobs similar to yours and actually call them and if you can, go see the completed work. Also check online for reviews at websites such as the Better Business Bureau, Angie’s List and Google reviews.
Give the contractor a thorough ‘interview.’ Ask them how long they have been in business. Ask them if they use subcontractors. Ask them if their labor force is legally able to work in the US. Ask them how and when they expect payment.
Once you do choose a contractor, make sure you get everything in writing, including specific materials and products to be used.
