HUNTINGTON — There's a new barbecue joint in town. Owner Roger Garrett is hoping Biggs BBQ is going to hit it big in Huntington.

The small shop is located between Dan's Sport Shop and the First United Methodist Church. Garrett got the nickname "Biggs" playing football as a defensive lineman for Marshall between 2003 and 2005. The restaurant's logo has a small tribute to Jonathan Goddard, a former Marshall player who died in a motorcycle accident in 2008.

"Cooking is always something I've had a passion for. I've loved cooking. It was just something besides football that I always wanted to do. So I pushed myself. I always loved barbecue. It's something we always had in Georgia," Garrett said. "My mom actually came down from Georgia to help me get my start here."

The location of the barbecue shop was previously The Sandwich Joint and had been home to several other restaurants, including Gourmet-To-Go.

According to Garrett, the process of fixing up the building was a lot of work. "We started work on the building in October. It was pretty rundown when we started. We had to completely remodel the whole thing. We had to fix it so everything would be suitable for people to come in and take a look. We had to completely redo the walls and ceilings. We also had to bring in all new kitchen equipment," Garrett said. "I had a guy out in Kentucky make the smoker for me. It's what is called a straight-flow smoker."

After all the work, the shop opened March 10.

"I had done catering for a while, so we had a good following before we opened. Last year I won a barbecue competition at Pullman Square. So we had a pretty good turnout on our first day." Garrett said.

Garrett said he plans to still do catering in addition to the offerings at Biggs BBQ.

"We we will have different stuff every day. Today we have barbecue chicken and pork chops. Another day we might have ribs, brisket or pulled pork. We are also going to have different sides. From what we've seen from our customers, we're going to have to have macaroni and cheese and potato salad every day. There will always be a third side like baked beans or cabbage every day. We actually start prep work the night before. I try to get in at 6 a.m. so that everything is ready by noon."

Platters sell for $10 and include an entree - such as chicken or pork chops - and two sides.
