In November of 2015 restaurateur Pat Pelley opened Books and Brews, a combination restaurant, bar and a used bookstore in Hurricane. Three years later, he's opened a second location in the Elk City community of Charleston.
"We first talked about opening a second location two and a half years ago, but I have four kids under the age of 5 now. We put off the second location when my wife Clare was expecting twins. We waited a full year. Then we got in touch with a guy named Tighe Bullock who had just acquired this property which used to be a Dollar General," Pelley explained. "We built this location off from the ground up. Many restaurants fail within their first year and others fail within the first three years. We had a great loyal customer base. Opening up something this big was a great challenge. It was like going from having one child in Hurricane to having triplets down here. We put the Hurricane location on limited hours and scaled back the menu for a little while as we got everything ready down here. We're going to get that location back to full capacity soon."
The new restaurant will be holding a grand opening starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 23.
"We opened on December 18th, and each week we have got progressively busier and busier. On the 23rd we are going to be working with several different people. We will be working with Putnam Princess Parties and the children can meet Belle from Beauty and the Beast. We are going to have drink specials. We are planning on doing some giveaways. We are also going to have a raffle for a prize basket," Pelley said. "It's going to be a welcome to the community event."
Books and Brews has a variety of sandwiches, salads, and pizzas. Sandwiches are typically priced at $10 and include a made-to-order "Books Burger," a meatball sub, and a Cuban sandwich. Pizzas are given literary themed names like the "Treasure Island" ($10 10-inch, $17 14-inch) served with marinara, mozzarella, spinach, banana peppers, tomatoes, onions, basil, and cracked pepper. There is also a buffalo chicken salad ($10) made with mixed greens, tomatoes, green peppers, mozzarella, bread, and a side of ranch.
Every day the restaurant offers a dozen different beers to choose from, including selections from West Virginia breweries such as Big Timber, Greenbrier Valley Brewing and Mountain State Brewing. The restaurant has its special house blend of Columbian coffee. There is also a variety of used books for sale at 80 percent off of their retail price.
Books and Brews has also developed a following for an upscale twist on a West Virginia classic: the pepperoni roll.
"We've been told we may have some of the best pepperoni rolls in the Tri-State. We start with fresh dough. It's a 15-ounce dough ball. Then we use mozzarella, provolone, and muenster cheese. We use sliced pepperoni and season the top with basil, oregano, and olive oil before we put it in a 550-degree oven." Pelley said. "They are massive! They are $13.25 and I've never had a complaint because of how much comes out. We were written up in Taste of the South magazine for these."
