Recently opened in the heart of the West Huntington's Central City antique district is a newly renovated coffee shop/bookstore. Cicada Books and Coffee houses hundreds of used fiction, nonfiction and children's books. Served up beside the books are hot and cold beverages along with daily pastry specialties.

"This property had been empty for a couple of years, and we acquired this location about a year and a half ago. We did renovations very slowly. About only a quarter of this space was a retail shop and the rest was a workroom. It wasn't ready for the public when we bought the building," said Cicada Books owner Dawn Norman. "We spent the first year renovating the building and the past several months were spent acquiring our book inventory plus finishing our coffee bar. We completely installed a small kitchen. I acquired the coffee machine from a supplier in Lexington. We acquired about 80 percent of our books from a supplier in Baltimore that sells in bulk."

Customers can enjoy a cup of fresh-brewed coffee priced at $2 for a small, and $3 for a large or hot chocolate starting at $3 small and $4 for a large size. There's also cappuccino starting under $3, mocha priced at $4, and a latte priced at $3.50. If you are looking to cool down, you can order Cold Brew Coffee for $2. Also available is hot tea by the pot for $4 or a cup starting at $2 in varieties such as Earl Grey, green tea and chai.

"We wanted to fund local and regional independent businesses. For our coffees, we use a social enterprise type organization called First Hand that supplies half of our coffee; the other half comes from a micro roaster in Athens, Ohio." Norman said. "We have three different local sources for our pastries: Camden Corner in Westmoreland, The River & Rail Bakery, and I have a baker at the Wild Ramp who makes things for us. The variety changes every day. The pastries range from $2 to $4 typically. We are right now offering an espresso-soaked brownie with whipped cream on top that we call a brownie melt."

There will be a open-mic night at 8 p.m. Monday, July 30. Poets and other talents looking to participate can sign up a half-hour before the show. Cicada Books is located at 604 14th St. W. in Huntington, across the street from The Wild Ramp.
