Dairy Queen is located at 6435 Route 60 in Barboursville.

Dairy Queen started, at first, not as a restaurant, but as the brand name for a recipe of ice cream created by John Fremont and his son, Alex. It was the first soft-serve on the market and made its debut at a small ice cream shop named Sherb's in Kankakee, Illinois, in 1938. Owner Sherb Noble knew he had a hit and two years later opened the first stand-alone Dairy Queen restaurant in Joliet, Illinois. Today Dairy Queen is a global juggernaut with over 6,800 locations worldwide. Barboursville got a new Dairy Queen on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

"We completely remodeled this building - we gutted the building all the way to the outside walls and rebuilt everything. We put in new framing, new drywall, everything. We had to bring in two semi-loads of equipment," Manager Drew Garnes said. "We started training around the 15th of February. We ended up hiring 65 people. We had two friends and family days to train before we ended up opening. We had a grand opening with a ribbon cutting and the mayor. We also had door prizes for the first 100 people through the drive-through and balloons for the kids."

"I worked at some of the other Dairy Queen locations for the last few years and then came down to this one when we opened it. I go to church down here at Lewis Memorial Baptist Church."

In addition to its famous ice cream, Dairy Queen has a full variety of American fast-food favorites, including hamburgers, hot dogs and its famous chicken strips. There's a selection of "Five Buck Lunches," which include an entree, small drink, fries and a small sundae. Other items on the menu are the turkey BLT and the Flamethrower Burger with bacon plus pepper jack cheese.

Of course, there's no shortage of dessert options, including dip-cones, milkshakes, sundaes and Blizzards.

"We always have a Blizzard of the Month. Our current one is Mint Oreo. We have several seasonal Blizzards including the Snickerdoodle Cookie Dough Blizzard and Dipped Strawberry Blizzard with Ghirardelli chocolate," Garnes explained. "Next month, we're going to have a whole new lineup of Blizzards for the summer, including a cotton candy-flavored Blizzard. We also have Chicken & Waffles coming out in April."

Customers can also order a variety of custom ice cream cakes for birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions.
