Whether you're looking for a Mardi Gras King Cake, some green cookies for Saint Patrick's Day, just a dozen donuts for work, there's a place near Ashland with decades of baking experience.

Located in Flatwoods, just outside of Russell, Kentucky, Dave's Bakery is open each morning preparing all sorts of sweets. With Thursday, March 14, marking the annual "Pi Day" you may want to celebrate with a fresh baked pie.

"We've been at this location for over 30 years. Our owner, David Kersey, originally built this building to be his house and during the building process decided to turn it into a bakery. We do cakes, pies, and cookies. We are famous for our doughnuts. Because we open 5:30 every morning we get everyone going to work and to school. We have huge crowds every morning," said Brandi Havens, a baker at Dave's Bakery.

"We have a crew that comes in any time from 9 p.m. until 11 p.m. at night depending on the size of the orders starts doing donuts. We have a crew of specialty bakers that do pies, cakes, and cream horns. We bake all through the day. So we keep the fryers and the ovens going almost all night."

Havens continued, "For Mardi Gras we've been doing King Cakes. They are a yeast cake that's actually kind of like a cinnamon roll. Traditionally there's a small baby doll or gold coin inside and whoever finds the baby or the coin has to buy the cake next year. We're planning on keeping them on the shelves until Fat Tuesday (March 5) but if someone wants to special order them we can still make one for them. Next week, we're probably going to have some green goodies for Saint Patrick's Day and later on we will have some egg-shaped cookies for Easter. For each holiday we decorate the cookies with extra icing."

Donuts are available from 80 cents to $1.49 depending on type. There's a daily variety of cream filled, glazed, and jelly donuts. You can get a dozen glazed for $8.50 or a dozen mixed donuts for $8.95. There are other pastries available including long-johns and apple fritters for 99 cents.

"We do a variety of cream pies and fruit pies including lemon meringue, coconut cream, chocolate cream, strawberry, rhubarb, cherry, and pecan pie. We have a different variety each day and we can make whatever you want. Our pies range from $11.75 to $13.75. We also do small pies for $4.99," Havens said. "We keep what we call 'variety cakes' in stock. They come in flavors like hot fudge, Italian cream, orange with orange cream icing, strawberry with strawberry icing, and carrot cake. We make specially designed cakes for birthdays or other special occasions. We also do cookies. We are famous for our smiley face cookies with yellow icing, M&M eyes, and a chocolate smile. We probably go through two to three dozen of those every day."
