It never hurts to have some extra dough. One business in Huntington with no shortage of it is Grab 'n Go Grub, a small take-out restaurant that has recently started selling edible cookie dough. The small restaurant also offers hot dogs, homemade pepperoni rolls and sandwiches.
"This was the home of Daniello's Pizza before the owner moved down the street and started the Press Club," said Jason Corrigan, the owner of Grab 'N Go Grub. "I'm the owner of the building. I had a couple of offers for new businesses that fell through, and all through that time I was doing some remodeling. The space was vacant, and I don't think an empty business reflects well on the other businesses around. So, last August I opened up Grab 'n Go Grub."
The restaurant originally had a smaller menu and was only open during lunch hours.
"After a month or two later we had a partnership with Kustom Kreams, which ran longer hours," he said. "They moved out to a bigger location down the street in the spring, and we launched our own edible cookie dough."
Corrigan said the recipe is free of eggs or anything that could make someone sick.
"You could keep it at room temperature, and it would be alright," he said. "We do chill it because people prefer it cold. We have some different options with it such as a cookie sandwich, which is two cookies with cookie dough in between. I've been working on the recipe for the dough for the last six months."
Corrigan said they keep the dough for about two to three days before they take what's left over and bake it into cookies.
"Then we make a new batch of dough," he said.
Dough is available in a variety of flavors, including Chocolate Chip, Sugar Cookie, Oreo, Turtle Brownie and Macadamia Nut. Single scoops are $4, doubles are $6 and triples for $8. There is a special this June that features two pepperoni rolls, chips, a drink and one scoop of edible cookie dough for $9.
The restaurant offers two different types of dogs: a beef and pork blend and a Nathan's All-Beef Hot Dog. The sauce and slaw are both made in store, Corrigan said.
"Our pepperoni rolls are becoming famous," he said. "They're pretty much raved about by all of the customers. We put a lot of pepperoni in them. All of our sandwiches are served hot like a grilled cheese. We brown the bread on both sides with a flat iron."
Several combos are available that include a chips and a drink. These include two pepperoni rolls ($6), two hot dogs ($5), two all-beef dogs ($6), three barbecue sliders ($6) and grilled cheese ($5). You can also enjoy soup and a sandwich for $7.
