Cake and rock music might not seem like the most obvious combination, but it's a sweet success at Charleston's Rock City Cake Company. One of the more unusual dessert shops in the Tri-State area, Rock City Cake Company offers a wide variety of cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts and other desserts with the selection changing every day. The shop also hosts a wide variety of rock and roll memorabilia ranging from classic bands to modern rock. On the weekends it becomes a music venue frequently hosting a variety of different acts.

"We originally started this business in Logan County in August of 2013. My business partner, Courtney Marsh, had decorated cakes for years and she decided she wanted her own storefront. She went to culinary school in Pittsburgh, but had to leave for family reasons before she could graduate. We started as a little hole in the wall with no lobby and have grown ever since," said Morgan Morrison, co-owner of Rock City Cake Company. "We moved to Charleston in December of 2016 in a much smaller location. Last July, the roof at our old place collapsed. So we got out of that lease and stumbled across this place. Because this was much larger we've grown into a music venue as well. This building has been many things over the years. Back in the day it was a bar called Muldoon's, then it was Banana Joe's and Impulse. Ironically, the last thing it was was a 24-hour gym. The building sat vacant for a few years and was pretty much a shell waiting to be filled."

For Morrison, the bakery's rock music theme was a no-brainer.

"We both just love rock 'n' roll music. We love the idea of incorporating music and sticking with that theme. It's something we're both passionate about. We're not frilly pink bakery types. It's funny every time I get an autograph or a cool collectible from a concert, I'm always torn 50/50 do you want to put it in our house or in our business. We have some personal stuff higher up on the walls such as an autographed Faith No More poster. We also try to support the local artists. We have a lot on display that we buy."

"We keep a huge variety of items we never limit ourselves. We have three standard cases that we fill every day. We have what we call our cupcake case which we fill with our standard flavors and we make six new specialty flavors every day. We have our bakery case that has cookie sandwiches, cream horns, doughnuts and other baked goods. Then we have our refrigerated where we keep gourmet dipped fruit, cake balls, and pies. We have people here 24 hours a day refilling the case every night. This weekend for 'Toy Story 4' we had some special items decorated with Woody and Buzz. Any kind of holiday or event that we like we go all out. We did a lot of Star Wars-themed stuff for May 4. We also did an event for Harry Potter's birthday," Morrison said.

They can also make custom cakes for birthdays, weddings, and other special occasions. Customers should call at least two weeks ahead.
