If you like barbecue served up with a pint of brew, you may want to check out Smokin' J's Rib and Brewhouse. One of the newest, smoking barbecue joints recently opened in Ashland. The restaurant offers a wide variety of sandwiches along with burgers, barbecue chicken, and ribs. Located in the former home of Shooters Sports Bar on Wolohan Drive right past the Walmart. The restaurant is a joint venture among Jason Camp, Jimmy Blanke and John Vorndran. The trio formed a small company they call The 3 J Group.
"We've opened Smokin' J's Rib and Brewhouse and we're opening Winchester Steak Seafood and Bourbon bar down at the new Marriott Delta hotel that's being built in downtown Ashland. We're also feeding the Braidy construction workers and we will be their in house food and beverage guys for the Braidy aluminum mill." CEO Camp explained. "We've opened about three businesses over the course of 12 months."
The menu offers sandwiches served on your choice of a bun or Texas Toast. These include chopped pork $8, beef brisket $10, and burgers priced around $8. There's also specialty sandwiches like the Sloppy J which has a blend of brisket and pork simmered in a savory sauce.
"This was formerly Shooters Sports Bar and Grill. They closed in April and we acquired this space at the start of June. We opened on June 27, in just under 30 days we came in and did some redecorating and painting. We moved the whole kitchen around, put up our signs and turned things around as fast as we could." Camp said.
"We have 25 televisions. They were installed when this was a sports bar and we moved a few around to the outside patio area. We completely moved all of the equipment out of the kitchen and changed the layout to make it more efficient. We have a Southern Pride 7500 smoker in the back. We do live music every Friday and Saturday and we'll be hosting live music on the outside stage on the first Saturday of each month starting on Saturday, Aug. 4."
The restaurant offers both baby back and St. Louis-style ribs, barbecue chicken and jalapeo cheddar sausage. You can try their 2 Meat Sampler for $15 or a 3 Meat Sampler for $18. If you're looking to feed your family, you can order Smokin' J's Feast for under $40. The feast includes a full rack of baby back ribs, half-pound of pork, two sides and two orders of fries or baked potatoes. Blanke is the COO of the 3 J's Group and Smokin' J's resident rib master.
"It's a sweet barbecue. We use more of a brown-sugar-based sauce as opposed to the mustard and vinegar styles which are common in the South. We slow-smoke everything for 14 hours here. Slow and low is the way to go." Blanke explained. "We offer both baby back and St. Louis-style ribs. The baby back is cut higher of the animal and is a much leaner product. The St. Louis-style is larger rib that's a bit more fatty but more flavorful. Everything we have is slow-smoked. The Southern Pride Smoker can cook 700 pounds of meat. Everything goes through our smokers then is finished off in the ovens, and grilled off for every customer who walks into our door. We have a jalapeno cheddar sausage that we bring in from San Antonio Texas. They're the real deal."
Smokin' J's Rib and Brewhouse is located at 1320 Wolohan Drive in Ashland. It is open from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours are 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Cash and all major cards are accepted.
