Truckin' Cheesy, owned by chef Tyler Shelton, is serving up breakfast sandwiches, burgers and Philly steak sandwiches.
"We've been operating this truck for about six weeks now. Josh Villeneuve, my co-operator, and I had been in the restaurant business for about 10 years apiece. Ever since I moved to West Virginia I've been cooking," Shelton said. "I started running another truck for another guy. His first truck broke down, so I built him a new truck. I decided I wanted to build my own truck. We bought this truck off of a church. It was empty van that was all white. It took us about a year to build it all together. I bought it piece by piece, and we did all the work ourselves. I hand-painted the truck. It was a labor of love."
The restaurant's signature item, the Bangin' Burger, starts at $6 for a single while the double Big-Bang Burger is priced at $10. The burgers are topped with colby-jack cheese, onion, pickle, ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard. Customers can order it served on a brioche bun, a pretzel bun and even glazed donuts. There's also a Double Tap grilled cheese sandwich ($3) served on Texas toast with a side of dill pickles. You can also enjoy a Flamin' Philly ($6) served with your choice of shaved steak or grilled chicken.
"The menu's a lot of items that I've been making over the years and I'm really good at. I wanted to put my own spin on a few things and create a menu that's fun for our customers. You can get burgers on different bun types. I'm big fan of our pretzel bun. Some of our other items like our Jamaican Jerk sandwich offers a choice of ham, grilled chicken or grilled pork tenderloin," Shelton said. "We also have a grilled cheese taco, which, instead of using a taco shell uses a grilled cheese sandwich. We also serve nachos and crinkle cut fries. You can even get sausage gravy fries as a side for your breakfast sandwich. I did a poll to see if I could get 100 likes to add burritos and wraps. We hit it in just a few hours. So in another month we will probably add burritos and wraps as well.
"I kind of have a regular set schedule now, but it jumps around with all the events now for the summer. On Wednesdays we're usually at GC Services, on Thursday we're usually by River Tower, and on Fridays we're either at Amazon or the Family Dollar on Route 10, and on Saturday we are by Spring Valley Lake. We do late-night shifts on 4th Avenue Friday and Saturday starting at 10 p.m. On Friday, May 10, we will be doing Food Truck Friday for the Huntington City Mission, and on Saturday this week we will be at the Barboursville Wine Festival. On June 8, I will be at Barboursville Park for the West Virginia Shakespeare Festival."
