Located next to the Ashland Beverage Center, Wild Horses Grill & Cantina is a new Tex-Mex restaurant with tons of personality. It offers steaks, burgers and barbecue in addition to Mexican favorites such as tacos. Owner Marria Lana has turned the small restaurant into a gallery filled with Mexican, American Indian and Cuban art. It also features a full-service cantina where you can kick back with an ice-cold beer or a margarita.

"I'm a native of Kentucky. I was born and reared in Grayson. I moved away for 25 years before coming back and I decided to open a restaurant. This building was a historical home. It belonged to a man named Denzel Ferguson, who was a retired military man. I volunteered for the USO so I find his story fascinating. In a way he's been my guardian angel through all of this," Lana said.

He continued, "We restored all of the woodwork in the house. I chose not to paint the walls in some rooms because I love the character of them. I took all of the doors in the building to local schools and they painted them. A friend who is an artist and my niece also painted them. We then hung them up because I didn't want to throw them away. I have seven shipping containers attached to the home setting, what I call a "back-house," which has the kitchen area."

You can start off your meal with the Blue Grass Nachos ($7 half, $11 full) with freshly made tortilla chips, queso, homemade chili, black beans, lettuce, sliced jalapenos, pico de gallo and sour cream. For dinner there are Street Tacos ($11) with your choice of meat such as ground beef, mahi-mahi, carnitas or brisket. There's also a Wild Horse Burrito ($11) with ground beef and an "El Thiago" ($11) burrito with carne asada. Entrees include a Wildcat Strip (New York strip) steak ($20), shrimp and grits ($11) and blackened salmon ($14). There is also a variety of sandwiches including pulled-pork barbecue ($8) and a western bacon burger ($8). Every Sunday there is a special brunch menu with new items each week.

"I wanted to bring something different to the Tri-State area and some culture to the community. I have some original artwork from Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba and my travels throughout the United States. I have a very eclectic personality to begin with and I love art and architecture. I just decided to take different aspects of art and put it together then work it works well together," Lana said. "Too often when you go out you see people sitting around playing with their phones. There's no conversation. So I wanted to create an atmosphere where they had something to talk about."
