KENOVA — “In all the world there’s only one” proudly proclaims the sign at Evaroni’s Pizza in Kenova.
Residents of the small town have been enjoying the pizzeria run by William and Jean Evans since 1968. The restaurant’s original home was adjacent to a former women’s club next to the city post office before moving to its current home, which was once a glass factory. Over the years, it has slowly expanded to include a fireside dining room, a banquet room, stained glass windows and the family’s growing collection of Marshall University memorabilia.
“I think we’ve lasted so long because of good service, good quality of food and consistency,” said Reva Cremeans, manager and longtime employee. “Plus we make it with love. You have to care about what you do. I could hire you off the street, but if it’s not in your heart it’s just not going to work. I’ve worked for Mr. and Ms. Evans for 36 years. I came here when I was 17, and I stayed here because I became really good friends with the Evans. I came to think of them more like parents.”
Cremeans noted the restaurant has lots of repeat customers.
“We have a lot of people who when they go out of town come back to eat,” she said. “We’ve had people all the time call in to ask if we could ship to their people. One customer spent $300 to send 12 pizzas out of state. We tried freezing some, pre-baking others — trying to figure out what was the best way to get them to him.”
Evaroni’s famous pizzas range in size from a 10-inch small ($6 for a plain cheese) to a 13-inch medium ($10.25 cheese) to a 15-inch large ($11.50 cheese). Each additional topping ranges in price from $1.25 (small), $1.75 (medium), to $2.10 (large). There’s also a special Evaroni’s Works packed with seven toppings. Traditional pizza toppings are available including pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms and olives. In more recent years ham, jalapeno peppers and pineapple were added to the menu.
The restaurant also offers its signature spaghetti ($7.50), baked spaghetti ($8.50) and chicken dinners ($6.79). There is also an assortment of sandwiches served on 9-inch Italian buns including an Italian submarine ($5.29), sugar flaked ham ($5.29), pizza bread ($3) and a pure beef steak deluxe ($5.29).
Evaroni’s is located at 914 Oak St., Kenova, W.Va. It is open from 4 to 9:30 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday. It is open from 4 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
