WAYNE — Huntington St. Joe scored four runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to break open a close game and defeat Wayne 11-5 Friday in a high school baseball season opener.

"We hit the ball so well," Irish coach Dave Jenkins said. "This is a good way to start the season."

Lenny Washington went 2 for 3 with five runs batted in and smashed a 390-foot home run in the sixth to aid St. Joe's cause. The sophomore also pitched the final two innings in relief of starting and winning pitcher Charlie White, who allowed two runs on five hits, with five strikeouts and two walks. White also went 3 for 4 with two RBI.

John Piakowski and Chip Sweeney had two hits for Huntington St. Joe.

Zack Perry went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBI for the Pioneers. Josh Perry and Jeremiah Milum had two hits each.

Wayne entertains Man at 5 p.m. Monday. The Irish are at home to Charleston Catholic at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

CABELL MIDLAND 8, SPRING VALLEY 7: The Knights rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a walk-off victory over the Timberwolves.

For Cabell Midland (1-0), the win came in the game that started their 2018 spring campaign. Madison Jeffrey homered and knocked in two runs while Griffin Adkins went 3 for 4 at the plate.

For the Timberwolves (0-2) it was the second late-inning defeat in as many games after surrendering seven runs in the final two innings in a loss versus Huntington Thursday.

Spring Valley took a 5-0 in the top of the second inning then stretched that to 6-1 with a run in the third. The Timberwolves added a final run in the top of the fourth inning.

Hunter Bellomy paced the Timberwolves with three hits including a double and two runs batted in while Cameron Hodge also recorded two RBIs in the loss.

Spring Valley will travel north on Saturday for a scheduled 2 p.m. game against Parkersburg South. Cabell Midland returns to action at 6 p.m. Monday at home vs. Boyd County.

POINT PLEASANT 13, RITCHIE COUNTY 3: Brody Jeffers went 3 for 3 with two home runs and six RBI to lead the Big Blacks to a season-opening triumph over the Rebels.

Kyelar Morrow went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles for Point Pleasant. Alec Smith and Sam Pinkerton each went 2 for 3. Levi Mitchell was the winning pitcher.

Point Pleasant returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Monday at home against Chapmanville.
