HUNTINGTON — It was a celebration that was 31 years in the making. On Sunday evening, fans filed into the Cam Henderson Center to join Marshall's men's basketball team for the announcement of the pairings for the NCAA tournament.
It was announced that Marshall would play Wichita State in its first game of the NCAA Tournament.
The matchup between the Herd and the Shockers will take place at 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday in San Diego, Calif.
Marshall junior guard Jon Elmore, the Conference USA Tournament MVP, said that he looks forward to the matchup with the Shockers.
"I think it's a good matchup for us," Elmore said. "They've got good guards and we've got good guards. They've got a good big and we've got a good big. We like our chances and we're going in fired up."
The winner of Friday's matchup will take on the winner of West Virginia and Murray State on Sunday.
As the announcement was made, players jumped to their feet with fans cheering in the seats behind them.
Elmore added that Wichita State is the mold for what Marshall is trying to create within its program.
