HURRICANE — The Hurricane High School Leo Club had a fundraiser at the school for several weeks to raise funds for Putnam Shoes For Children organization.
There are approximately 50 students in the club, and 12 students stayed after school to work the event. The event was led by teacher and club sponsor Jill Sergent and co-sponsor Angie Turkelson. Sergent is a member of the Scott Teays Lions Club in Teays Valley, which is the sponsoring club for the Leos.
The students sold ice cream sandwiches on Fridays for four weeks. Principal Paul McClanahan gave his full support and helped them with announcements to remind students about their special events.
Excitement was felt all around as the students united to work towards a common goal - helping the children of need in Putnam County. The Leo Club had read in the newspaper about the Putnam Shoes For Children organization and decided they wanted to help these children.
"We are very excited to help the children in our community and feel proud that it was so successful. We hope to do this again next spring," said Hattie Sergent, student founder and president of the Leo Club.
"It helps others out. The Leo Club gives us many opportunities to serve the community," said member Lexi Childers.
Hattie Sergent and Bekah Dimsdale are also honorary members of the Scott Teays Lions Club.
The Hurricane High School Leo Club raised $1,015 and presented the check to Putnam Shoes For Children board members Joe Sowers and Victor Stallard last week. Putnam Shoes For Children was honored that these students valued their program and gave so much of their time to help us help the children of need.
