Congratulations to the Hurricane High Softball team for winning its fifth-consecutive AAA state championship. Heading into this season as the four-time defending champs, expectations were undoubtedly high for the team. With plenty of talented players returning from the previous season's championship team, Hurricane looked to be a strong contender once again.
A 2-3 record in their first five games, however, got the team's attention.
Coach Meghan Stevens remarked, "This team was different this year because we started off with a losing streak. They had never faced something like that, so it was a bit of a shock to their system. Instead of hitting the panic button, though, they simply worked harder and got better. I'm so proud of how hard they worked to accomplish their goals."
Hurricane ultimately finished the season with a 33-6 record. Their run through the state tournament included wins on Wednesday, May 22, over Wheeling Park (8-0) and George Washington (9-0). In the state title game, they again faced GW and won 11-5 to cap off their run to yet another title.
Congratulations once again to the girls and Coach Stevens on a tremendous accomplishment.
