BARBOURSVILLE - Zombies darted through Barboursville Park after dark Friday evening for Goodwill's fourth annual Running Dead 5K, and they did it for a better cause than just eating brains.
Organizers encouraged runners to wear costumes, as well as headlamps, flashlights and stuff that glows because some of the areas would be dark for the event, which usually attracts more than 100 runners. Awards were given to the top male and female runners overall and the top two men and women in each age category, plus a "Drop Dead Beauty Contest" recognized the best-dressed zombie and human.
Proceeds benefited Goodwill's Coats for Kids program. In 2016, the nonprofit organization purchased 300 new coats, gloves and hats for children in the Tri-State who needed warm winter clothing.
