Politicians betray Normandy's heroes

Martha MacCallum, a Fox News reporter, is going to cover the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy on June 6. It will be her second time to visit these sacred grounds, as her first visit was to show her children this historic place. Her comments about visiting Normandy the first time reminded me about the 25th anniversary on June 6, 1969. I was in the Air Force at the time and stationed in Spain. We were sent to Normandy to coordinate military protocol and patriotic music for the celebration. I actually got to meet Gen. Omar Bradley, and that thrill alone will remain with me for life.

During my Air Force career, I was involved in numerous patriotic celebrations, but Normandy was without a doubt the most memorable event, as the experience of viewing the cemetery alone and realizing every cross represented a hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that others could achieve their dreams, enjoy freedom and prosper under the flag of the greatest nation on earth - certainly one that makes me proud to be an American.

My memory of this experience is still as vivid as that day in June 1969, so every time I hear a radical politician preach about changes that should be made to this country, I am reminded why those brave heroes died fighting evil on the shores of Normandy. Evil will always be a part of certain human behavior, and sadly several of our elected congressmen and woman plus several senators make me sick at my stomach every time they open their mouths.

These people are probably the most inept, illiterate, self-serving, corrupt and greedy group of people ever assembled in our government. They are taking a nation that has been bought and paid for by the sacrifices of heroes and doing everything in their power to destroy it.

We deserve better than this. We owe that much to our fallen heroes.
