Timberline Four Seasons Resort offers downhill slalom skiing, much like you will see in the Olympics. The Timberline Race Department oversees with NASTAR public skiing Thursday through Monday, a junior race team, and a full slate of public races during the ski season including the 50th anniversary of the West Virginia Governor’s Cup that will include giant slalom and slalom races open to folks from age nine to over 60.

Here’s a look at West Virginia’s ski resorts.


Terra Alta, W.Va.

WHERE: Alpine Lake is located at 700 West Alpine Drive, Terra Alta, in the northern part of West Virginia southeast of  Morgantown.

WHAT: Great terrain for cross-country skiing enthusiasts.

State Park, Davis, W.Va.   

WHERE: in Davis, about 180 miles north and east of Charleston, and just north of Elkins. About 4 to 41/2 hours from Huntington.

FEATURES: Canaan Valley has an Airboard Terrain Park. Developed in Europe, this super sledding sport of airboarding (or snow bodyboarding) first came to North America in 2003. This high-tech sledding lets you make sharp turns and do freestyle aerials. Check out more online at www.airboard.com.

Snowshoe, W.Va.   

WHERE: Located in Snowshoe in Pocahontas County. About 4 to 4 1/2 hours from Huntington.

FEATURES: Big Top is a 15,000-square-foot gaming space filled with arcade games, a rock climbing wall, Eurobungy and will host dance parties and movies. The 100-room Expedition Station offers affordable slope-side accommodations. Expedition Rentals, an 11,000-square-foot slope side rental shop, is located in the lower level of Expedition Station. Also, Snowshoe has expanded its terrain park space with Spruce Glades Pro Park, a new terrain park for experts. At Silver Creek, the Super Park has added features to the intermediate and advanced trails.

Davis, W.Va.   

WHERE: In Davis, about 180 miles north and east of Charleston, and just north of Elkins. About 41/2 hours from Huntington.

FEATURES: Men’s Journal magazine named Davis one of the Top 10 Coolest Mountain Towns in North America. One feature is a one-mile trail called Twister, designed by Sno-Engineering, one of the most prestigious snow planning companies in the East.

Flat Top, W.Va.

WHERE: Winterplace is located two minutes south of Beckley off I-77, Exit 28, in Ghent/Flat Top, W.Va. About three hours from Huntington.

FEATURES: Winterplace, the closest ski resort to Huntington, has added two new quad lifts to get you to the top fast. The resort now has nine ski lifts and 27 trails. They’ve also added a new terrain park. The resort also has West Virginia’s largest snowtubing park with 16 lanes and five lifts.
