Former Fairview High School football coach Fred Ray is the new head coach at Bridgeport (Ohio) High School.

Ray, 37, went 23-23 in four seasons as head coach at Fairview in the Ashland suburb of Westwood, Kentucky, where he was an assistant from 2009-2012 before taking a job as offensive coordinator at River Valley High School for one season. Ray returned to Fairview and took over a program that was penalized for use of an ineligible player the season before, resulting in probation through 2017. Still, Ray led the Eagles to the Class A playoffs in each of his four seasons.

A standout quarterback at Ohio University from 2000 through 2003, Ray is a native of Martins Ferry, Ohio. He inherits a team that went 3-7 last season under Gary Krol, who resigned after one year with the Bulldogs. Bridgeport has gone 22-48 since 2010, the last season it made the postseason. The Bulldogs went 12-1 that year before falling to Shadyside in the third round of the playoffs.

"It's a good fit," Ray said of Bridgeport. "I've always had aspirations of coming back to the Ohio Valley. Any chance I get, I come back to where I grew up. My family and I look forward to being in Bridgeport."

Ray also played and coached for the defunct Huntington Heroes indoor football league team.
