BARBOURSVILLE — Following pool play, there is one West Virginia team still standing strong at the 2019 U.S. Youth Soccer Eastern Regional Championships.
FC Alliance Athletica, a Morgantown-based team, continued its undefeated play during the tournament after posting a 4-1 win over Black Watch 2001 from Eastern New York on Sunday afternoon.
With the decisive win, FC Alliance Athletica advances to the championship rounds where they will take on Beadling 2001G South Red from Pennsylvania-West in a 10 a.m. semifinal on Tuesday morning.
During pool play, FC Alliance Athletica scored 12 goals while allowing just the lone tally that came in Sunday's match.
Beadling 2001G South Red advanced to the semifinals by way of a wild card that came after they finished with a 1-0-2 record in pool play. The lone victory came on Sunday when they topped another West Virginia-based team - Empire FC GU18 - by a score of 2-0.
That win catapulted them into the wild card ahead of four other teams who were one point behind them.
The semifinal matchup will serve as a bit of a border war between a pair of teams who are separated by just an hour in distance. Beadling, a prominent club within Pennsylvania, is based in Pittsburgh.
On Sunday evening, the tournament's pool play wrapped up with one other West Virginia team fighting to be involved in the championship rounds, but the WVFC 2002 Girls Black team lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision to New Jersey Rush 02 Grey, which eliminated them from advancing.
Coming into the match, both teams were even in goals allowed and goal differential, setting up a winner-take-all contest in the final game of pool play at Shawnee Sports Complex.
Aside from the FC Alliance Athletica win, West Virginia sides earned another two victories in the final day of pool play on Sunday with both coming at Shawnee Sports Complex.
In U-12 girls, FC Alliance 2007G earned a 1-0 win over Maryland United FC 2007 Red while in U-17 boys action, WVFC 2002 Black earned a 5-2 win over Beadling 2002 Boys South Red from Pennsylvania-West.
Perhaps the most impressive effort of the day for West Virginia ended in a draw.
In U-14 boys action, FC Alliance 05B battled to a scoreless draw with Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals 2005 Black from Eastern Pennsylvania. The scoreless tilt left the West Virginia side undefeated in pool play at 1-0-2, but they did not advance as Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals 2005 Black advanced from the group with a 2-0-1 record.
